In November 2015, Jabree Limited was engaged by the Department of Transport and Main Roads South Coast Region to undertake a Preliminary Cultural Heritage Assessment for the proposed Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 2 Project.
The project will connect the existing light rail system at Southport to heavy rail at the Helensvale station. The 7.4km route runs from Helensvale heavy rail station adjacent to the Gold Coast Line, along the Smith Street Motorway, to connect with the Gold Coast University Hospital light rail station.
Field survey results confirm the project area is of high Aboriginal cultural heritage sensitivity, with the following findings identified:
- a low density artefact scatter located an elevated ridge above Coombabah Creek; and
- Aboriginal scarred trees.
The Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003(Qld) places all persons in Queensland under a duty of care to
take all reasonable and practicable measures to ensure they do not harm Aboriginal cultural heritage whenever they undertake an activity.
Jabree will continue to work with the Department of Transport and Main Roads and GoldLinQ on the appropriate management and protection of Aboriginal cultural heritage.
